Creative Series – Model
BY JERRI JONES | 13.03.18
Introducing Frances Aaternir, the Ghanaian-Australian beauty, won the gene-pool lottery. Moving from Australia to London, Frances quickly started working with Tom Ford, and has become best known for her work with Balmain. Now calling New York home, Frances is taking the industry by storm – signed with Ford Models in NYC, The Hive in the UK and Chadwick in Australia.
As part of our creative series, profiling inspiring women chasing their dreams with style and grace – I chatted to Franny to find out what inspires her, her NYC hangouts and her never-fail outfit..
Frances (Franny) and I worked together in Melbourne, many years ago! Since then, I have keenly followed her blossoming career and enviable personal style along the way @francesaaternir. Now, I’m excited to have Franny as a JERRI.JONES Muse wearing JERRI.JONES in NYC- she epitomises the JERRI.JONES woman; classic, effortless and laid-back cool.
My favourite quote/mantra
‘Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.’
I heard an amazing quote the other day by Rumi ‘Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.’ I love it because I think it’s so important to surround yourself with people who support and inspire you, no matter how crazy your ideas may be.
Tell us about yourself and career
I graduated university with bachelor’s of commerce and economics. Then I did a complete 180 and left Australia 4 years ago to pursue a modeling career. I spent a year and a half in London and have been in New York for 2.5 years. Life is great, I get to travel the world doing a job I love. The downside is the unpredictable nature of the industry. It’s hard to commit to your friends or family, appointments and impossible to plan holidays. I spend my life constantly recovering from jet lag but honestly, I can’t complain!
Where do you source inspiration from
New York City. From the first time, I visited I knew I had to live there. I didn’t know how or when but I wanted to make it happen and 3 years later I was there. The thing that inspires me about New York is the hustle. It is the most competitive place for pretty much any industry and everyone is working their butt off chasing their dreams. Some people find the energy too intense or cut throat but I think it is so incredible to be in a city full of the most driven people in the world.
In this socially plugged in world, what do you do to switch off
I find walking my dog along the Hudson River in New York to be incredibly relaxing. I put my phone away and focus all of my attention on him for at least 45 minutes. When I’m in London I go to Regents Park and sit in the Rose Garden to meditate.
Who inspires you and why
My girlfriends inspire me because whether it be in modelling, designing, finance or motherhood, I just love to see them as women doing what they’re passionate about and succeeding in their own way.
Tips or tricks to succeed in modelling
For anyone starting out, find yourself a great mother agent with global connections, who has your best interest at heart and will always have your back. You could be the most beautiful, in shape, hard working model but if you don’t have a good agent you won’t get anywhere.
Be on time, work hard and be nice to everyone you meet. The industry works on word of mouth.
Take care of yourself. Workout, eat well, get enough sleep. Drink lots of water and take care of your skin and hair. Most importantly have fun! It’s a ‘limited time only’ career!
Holy grail product
Coconut oil! And I can’t live without Bioderma makeup remover.
Top 3 wardrobe essentials
A great coat is essential in New York, a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly and stylish flats that can take you from day to night.
Go to, never-fail outfit
Black Equipment silk blouse, relaxed fit high waisted Sandro jeans, Acne black heeled boots and black Chanel handbag. Casual chic and perfect for castings, work or dinner.
Favourite local and order
My local is Two Hands (Aussie cafe) in TriBeCa and I order the mushroom toast and an iced turmeric and chai almond milk latte (don’t judge ha!)
Favourite travel spot and why
Harbour Island, Bahamas. It is the ultimate chill zone. Incredible beaches, delicious food and no crowds.
